Mike’s Magic Discovery
Mike Kurtz first discovered the concept of Hot Honey in 2003. While studying Portuguese in Brazil, he came upon a life-changing pizzeria. They didn’t just serve regular ole’ jars of honey at each table, they served jars of honey with chili peppers mixed right in. When Mike tried drizzling this chili honey concoction on his pizza, his tastebuds exploded with flavor. That’s when everything changed for Mike. He spent months upon months testing, trying, infusing, searching for the most delicious recipe…until he finally found the one. Pure honey, chilies, and vinegar. That’s it. His genius and passion created a shelf-stable, all-natural product that never expires. He began bottling his recipe, and thus, Mike’s Hot Honey was born. Honestly, we’d kill to be part of the friend group who received an original jar of Mike’s Hot Honey for Christmas in 2004…
It’s No Surprise that Mike’s Business Took Off
In August of 2010, Mike’s pizza-fueled passion led him to an apprenticeship at a Brooklyn pizzeria. He brought in a bottle of his hot honey for the owner to try and they began drizzling it on pies at the pizzeria. Of course, customers fell in love with his hot honey. And by November, Mike was selling bottles of it!
By 2016, Mike had a complete brand, a Chef’s Bottle, and soon, his very own NYC holiday kiosk.
2019 brought Mike his own fried chicken concession stand inside the legendary Madison Square Garden.
In April of 2020, Mike’s Hot Honey quickly adapted to the state of affairs. To adhere to local social distancing guidelines, Mike launched the hot honey dip cup. Dip cups ensured that no one would have to forgo the magic of hot honey on pizza, even with delivery. Trust us, we know.
We Fell in Love with Mike’s Story
Mike’s story is New York to the core. It’s fueled by flavors, by passion! Just like Carmela and Gennaro Sbarro’s when they opened their first shop in 1956.
Carmela, Gennaro, and their three sons came to America from Naples, Italy right in the thick of the Italian-American food boom of the 1950s.
What started as an Italian salumeria quickly became the go-to shop for city shift workers looking for a fold eat repeat kind of slice. Carmela “Mama” Sbarro’s slices became so popular, the Sbarros opened another shop dedicated to pizza.
Now, Sbarro spreads the Italian love in over 300 restaurants across the United States alone.
